The Indian Cambridge School celebrates Labour Day to honour hard work and embrace inclusivity.
Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, is celebrated around the world every year on May 1 to commemorate workers’ struggles and sacrifices. Keeping in the spirit of the occasion, the faculty and the students of The Indian Cambridge School in Dalanwala, Dehradun, came together to appreciate the contributions of the hardworking individuals of The ICS support staff. We wanted to remind everyone to treat all workers with respect, dignity, and inclusivity, not only because they are the backbone of our institution but also because that’s the least we can do for them as fellow human beings. Through this post, we will discuss the significance of Labour Day and the celebrations held in the school.
What is Labour Day, and when did it start?
The history of International Labour Day can be traced back to the industrialization era in the 19th century in Chicago. This is when workers across the country demanded better working conditions, fair wages, and shorter working hours. In India, the first Labour Day, also known as “Kamgar Din,” was celebrated in 1923 on May 1 in Madras. It was organised by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan to honour the labourers who drive our nation’s economy and for their contributions to our society’s progress. In the years since then, Labour Day celebrations have acknowledged the immense value and worth of hard work, regardless of one’s occupation or industry.
Why did the best all-girl boarding school in Dehradun celebrate Labour Day?

How did The Indian Cambridge School celebrate Labour Day?
Before Labour Day celebrations commenced, Gurpreet Ma’am gave a moving speech in which a passage struck a chord with all of us:
“As arduous as the Greek god Ponos, onerously have these men and women toiled under the sun. Such men and women of honour need no further introduction. They deserve more accolades instead of being outright shunned. Their yakka labour is stupendously noteworthy. Covertly responsible for keeping the machinery running, with heart-warming contributions to the philanthropic cause, let’s make this special day magnificent and stunning.”
Following these poignant and soul-enlightening words, The Indian Cambridge family lit the ceremonial lamp while offering a heartfelt prayer to higher powers. At this point, we were all introduced to Labour Day 2023 celebrations with the dictum, “Laborare est Orare”—work is worship. It states that engaging in work with dedication and sincerity is a sacred act, a form of reverence!
The students then took to the stage and sang the group anthem and recited endearing poetry that resonated with the theme of the celebrations. They conveyed their heartfelt emotions to the ICS support staff.
After that, the diligent warriors of the ICS support staff were invited onto the stage to participate in fun-filled activities such as musical chairs and many other games. The event ended with the academic director, Neelam Ma’am, delivering a profound and enlightening message to everyone present.
At The Indian Cambridge School, everyone’s contributions, from teachers to support staff, are highly regarded and celebrated. Labour Day is a powerful reminder to embrace inclusivity and honour hard work in all its forms. This is especially relevant in today’s society, where workers face inequality and a lack of recognition for their sacrifices. We must recognise and celebrate all workers’ contributions, regardless of race, gender, or class. Labour Day is an opportunity to reflect on these values and show appreciation for all workers’ hard work.
