The Indian Cambridge School, a girls boarding school in Dehradun, embraced the excitement of Sports Week that took place from August 21st to August 29th, 2023, in honour of Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary.
The Indian Cambridge School, an esteemed girls’ boarding school in Dalanwala, Dehradun, joyfully celebrated its Sports Week from August 21st to 29th, 2023. To celebrate Major Dhyan Chand’s 118th birthday on August 29th, also known as National Sports Day, our entire school united to honour the legacy of one of history’s greatest field hockey players while forging a legacy of our own filled with unity, triumph, and the joy of sports. In this blog post, we’ll explore the exciting school activities for both students and teachers while also offering a glimpse into the profound reverence for Major Dhyan Chand.
Meet the Legend: Major Dhyan Chand, The Magician
Dhyan Chand – 1
Born on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Singh was drawn towards hockey at a young age, which continued even after he enrolled himself in the army at the age of 16. He would become so engrossed in the game that his practice sessions continued long into the night under the moonlight (a reason why he is known as Dhyan Chand).
His extraordinary skills and devoted passion for the game played a pivotal role in securing three consecutive gold medals for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936, thereby cementing his legendary status in the world of sports.
Rightfully dubbed “The Magician” or “Wizard of Hockey,” he boasted exceptional ball control and dribbling skills, boasting an enduring record of 570 goals over his illustrious 23-year career. Not only could he move the ball at lightning speed, but he could anticipate the movements of his opponents, making it difficult for them to defend against him.

In 1956, Major Dhyan Chand retired from the army and was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. The Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports stands out as a prominent sporting distinction, just like the national stadium in New Delhi that bears his name. Even though he passed away in 1979 at the age of 74, his legacy continues to inspire countless hockey players and athletes around the world.
At The Indian Cambridge School, a girls boarding school, through our sports week celebrations, we honoured his remarkable achievements and drove our desire to instill the dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship that Major Dhyan Chand exemplified throughout his career.
The ICS Sports Week: Fostering Unity and Camaraderie
Indian Cambridge School, one of the best all-girls Dehradun schools with hostels, engaged in a variety of activities that embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork, but what set our sports week celebrations apart from other Dehradun schools with hostels?
The Indian Cambridge Sports Week was not just about sports but also about nurturing and strengthening the mentor-mentee relationships that continue to define our school community. We strongly believe that by breaking down the traditional boundaries of the classrooms, we are creating harmony between the mentors and mentees, which is the reason why The Indian Cambridge School is one of the few schools in Dehradun with hostels that promote holistic growth—lessons learned on the field are as valuable as those in the classroom.
The ICS Sports Week: A Week of Thrilling Activities
The Indian Cambridge School Sports Week offered a diverse array of engaging events and challenges that captivated participants and promoted holistic well-being. We commenced the week with invigorating yoga sessions, fostering awareness of the physical and mental health benefits for our students and staff. Next, we tested strength and unity with thrilling tug-of-war competitions.
But that was just the beginning; we switched gears, transitioning from intense tug-of-war to a mental showdown with our sports quiz. Our commitment to both mental and physical growth was no joke.
Energising Zumba classes inject fun into fitness, emphasising the significance of an active and healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, badminton, kho-kho, and table tennis matches ignited our competitive spirit, showcasing the talent and camaraderie among our students and staff.
Events like the three-legged race and badminton matches brought students and teachers together, breaking down classroom barriers.
This unity and mentorship extend beyond Sports Week, setting us apart from other Dehradun schools with hostels. These relationships form the bedrock of The Indian Cambridge ethos. To conclude the event, we added a touch of lightheartedness with fun races, reminding us that sports are not just about winning but also about savouring the journey.
